Lucia holds a Master in geological sciences of the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium where she graduated cum laude in 1979. She started her career as exploration geologist-geochemist in Africa, where she was part of the team that discovered the Morila gold mine in Mali, and Latin America. In the mid 1990’s, Lucia switched her career to the environmental sector. First working in a consultancy firm, she then joined Umicore in 2000. At Umicore, Lucia is mainly responsible for the management of the historical contamination legacy, both on production sites as on former mining concessions. She was the chair of NICOLE from 2009 to 2018.
