- MeRLIN: innovation at the heart of the shipping and port sectors

Spearheaded and managed by Technopole maritime du Québec (TMQ), MeRLIN is an industrial leaded network, dedicated to innovation in the shipping and port sectors. The network aims to provide greater access to R&D expertise as it seeks to facilitate the implementation of innovative projects that address the priorities of the maritime industry. MeRLIN supports the industry in defining its research needs, stimulating collaborative work on shared objectives, encouraging reflection and the quest for concrete solutions, promoting the implementation of long-term planning tools and fostering ties between stakeholders within the maritime community. The MeRLIN members and team worked collaboratively in the elaboration of summary sheets specific to each selected theme, which constitute a robust work plan for year 2016-2019 by describing objectives and expected results, deliverables and potential partners.

- Green Marine: a decade of improvement for the maritime industry’s environmental performance

Established in 2007, Green Marine is a binational environmental certification program that stems from a voluntary marine industry initiative to go beyond regulatory compliance. The Green Marine environmental program offers a detailed framework for maritime companies to first establish and then reduce their environmental footprint, through its 12 performance indicators. To date, more than 125 ship owners, ports, terminals and shipyards in Canada and the United States are participating in the program. The certification process is rigorous and transparent: results are independently verified and annual results are published. The most recent results (2017 year of operation) relate to the 10th year of evaluation for the founding members of the environmental program who continue to improve their performance, although the bar is constantly set higher for several criteria and new issues are now addressed.
