Climate change: risks and opportunities for investors

Presented by: Club d'investissement responsable du Québec

- Climate change and the bond market

At AlphaFixe Capital, we pay particular attention to climate change risks, which are at the top of the probabilities of occurrence and impact according to the Global Risk Report 2019 list published by the World Economic Forum. During the session, we will explore approaches to identify risks and opportunities in order to integrate them into the portfolio management process. We will also see that the bond market offers us some challenges. What is most important to remember is that there are solutions and that we need to acquire resources to innovate.

- Climate change and the challenges concerning fossil fuel investments

Climate change is complex and can no longer be ignored. The longer we wait, the stronger the impact will be, having a dire effect on our investment portfolios as well as the global economy, with consequences that will only increase over time.In order to meet the ambitious goal of the 2 degrees Celsius threshold by 2050, a carbon budget has been calculated and only about 20% of the total fossil fuel energy reserves should be exploited. In the event of more stringent regulations, companies holding said reserves will no longer be able to fully exploit them, although still prized by the markets. The carbon emissions of our companies will therefore become risk factors in the same way as other traditional risk factors, needing strong consideration and analyses in order to be properly evaluated. This is how we, as investors, try to make a difference - by thinking about how to mitigate this risk through the combination of economic, social and environmental dimensions.

- Managing Climate-Related Risks and Opportunities

Climate-related impacts are already occurring and will continue for many decades, with the potential to cause large scale economic disruption. Building on close to a decade of environmental and climate change leadership, TD is embedding assessment and disclosure of climate-related risks and opportunities within its business activities. This presentation will highlight TD's ongoing efforts towards addressing the recommendations of the Financial Stability Board's Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), including our participation in the United Nations-led Investor Pilot Project and the implications for our asset management business.
