– Verglass: a promising new Quebec technology for recycling curbside collected glass by micronisation
The challenges of finding local markets for the tens of thousands tons of glass recovered in Quebec’s sorting centers have been highly publicized in recent years. Fortunately, the search for solutions that can contribute to the local circular economy and with significantly increased added values compared to current practice is starting to bear fruit. Verglass Products (or Verglass) has recently established a micronization plant in Mirabel to produce 5 micron glass (d50). The products targeted by this technology include the replacement of carbonates (high GHG emitters) in cement and the manufacture of reflective granules to reduce the heat absorption of urban roofs. This presentation will focus on Verglass’s recent progress and on specific challenges (particularly technical) encountered (eg presence of contaminants, acceptability in civil engineering).
