– Towards smart and more sustainable use of ICTs

The smart use of ICTs could significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A first example will show how GHG emissions from a data center network can be minimized using real-time information collected on electricity generation. The second will explain how this data can also be used by machine learning to minimize GHG emissions for smart homes. Finally, there will also be a presentation of two new standards being developed by IEEE’s GreenICT Initiative to facilitate smart ICT applications. The first is to improve the accuracy of the real-time calculation of ICT emissions. The second provides a framework for minimizing emissions from data center networks in the context of cloud computing.
