– Innovate to Sustainably Restore a Mining Site: The Nature as a Model

The restoration of mines in northern Quebec presents numerous challenges. Not only are the sites difficult to access, limiting the amount of inputs that can be used, but the extreme climate of the region make the environment unsuitable for plant growth. T² Environnement and Viridis Terra Innovations have developed an experimental trial for the TSMC iron mine in order to develop an innovative low-input restoration method adapted to arctic extreme conditions. This trial integrates combinations of treatments (irrigation, site preparation, inputs, and various planting methods) with different indigenous shrub species in order to identify the combination best suited to the harsh. conditions of the site. A microbial inoculant is also developed in collaboration with Laval and McGill Universities.
Several treatments are currently being tested and the first site monitoring was conducted in the fall of 2018.
