– How Anaerobic Digestion has Impacted the Canadian Waste Landscape


One of the most significant alterations in the waste management landscape in Canada has been the implementation of anaerobic digestion (AD) technologies for the management of organic wastes. The primary reason for the spread of this technology has been its ability to divert organics from landfill, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the ability to generate energy products such as renewable electricity and renewable natural gas. At this point, AD developments for food waste have surpassed new composting system development in Canada, and are rapidly gaining in traction in the United States. The technology is already mature in the European context. Both large and small-scale AD facilities have either been constructed or are in planning stages currently, across the country. This presentation use a case-study approach to touch on a number of facilities that are being implemented, the reasons for technology selection, and the expected outcomes from a performance and cost standpoint.
