– The Champlain Bridge deconstruction: enhancing assets and recovering materials
The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) is a federal Crown corporation that reports to Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.
The current Champlain Bridge, which is managed by JCCBI, is coming to the end of its service life, which means that its deconstruction poses many challenges in terms of methods engineering and managing residual materials from the bridge. While looking to principles of the circular economy to recover, reuse and enhance as much of the structure’s assets and materials as possible, JCCBI is launching sustainable development programs to soundly and effectively manage all aspects of the project. Given that Montreal is the site of a great deal of construction work, it is important to optimize projects so that we can maximize returns on our social and environmental investments while soundly managing public funds.
