– Cellular glass, an innovative avenue for glass recycling
The recycling crisis, caused by the closure of the Chinese market, calls into question the viability of a fraction of American sorting centers. For several reasons, the recovery glass represents a significant profit potential, which recyclers can no longer ignore. The reflection presents 4 potential outlets for recycled glass, processed in the form of aggregates or powders, i.e.; abrasives, filter media, the incorporation of glass into concrete infrastructure and the redesign of glass into a “cellular” glass product, for its use as a replacement for extruded polystyrene insulation used under road foundations. The presentation lists the main reasons for the importance of considering cellular glass as a complementary avenue to the sustainability of sorting centers. These inherent physical characteristics, environmental benefits, efficiency of use and potential for profitability summarize these reasons.
